Ericsson has achieved an important milestone in its smart manufacturing process in China, with its smart factory in Nanjing now becoming operational.

The Swedish telecommunications giant spent £41m to transform its existing factory in Nanjing, which is now claimed as the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the industry. This facility produces 4G and 5G radio technology products, of which most support communication service providers in the Chinese market to enhance network capacity, deploying 5G, and putting Industry 4.0 in use.

The facility was upgraded in a span of 18 months and has been modernised every aspect of the production process in order to introduce and speedy deployment of 5G in the country. These upgrades include the first modular-designed automatic assembly line for 5G radios that will enable Ericsson to manufacture the latest 5G radios in the capacity needed for the local market.

An improved automatic packing line, supporting both 4G and 5G products, became operational in the second quarter of 2019.

In June, Ericsson announced its plans to build its first fully automated smart factory in the US, which would manufacture Advanced Antenna System radios to enhance network capacity and coverage in the rural areas, along with 5G radios for urban areas.

Recently the Swedish firm, together with Qualcomm successfully completed a new 5G milestone that was conducted in its lab. During this testing period, commercial Ericsson Radio System base stations were used, along with Ericsson standalone New Radio (NR) software and Ericsson’s 5G Cloud Core solution with a mobile smartphone form-factor test device that was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System.
